Heather Craig, degree apprentice
by Heather Craig
Did I always picture myself working in IT? The honest answer is no. In saying that, I always had a strong passion for technology from a young age. Through school, I was one of those kids who studied all the sciences. Call me crazy, but I just loved the challenge of problem solving and the excitement of working out the correct answer.
When it came to applying for university, I had no idea what to study. Back then I was made to believe that university was the only option. At 16 I wanted to be a Forensic Scientist. At 17, a Psychiatrist. At 18, a Journalist. As you can imagine, my personal statement must have been a great read.
Nevertheless, I sent off my choices and began the “waiting game”. However, in the midst of all this excitement, I came across the IBM Apprenticeship Scheme and decided to apply. Why not? I enjoyed both computing and maths. I successfully completed the IBM online test, assessment centre and interview and got the job!
However, I also received five university offers so there were alot of big decisions to make.
As you will have gathered, I opted for the fantastic opportunity to become an IBMer. Which I can honestly say I have not regretted since. The opportunity to learn on the job while earning is perfect.
In addition to this, I was recently given the opportunity to be a part of the new Degree Apprenticeship programme and jumped at the chance. Currently, I attend university one day per week studying Software Development for Business and work full-time the rest of the week.
Overall, I really do have the best of both worlds.
