I really want girls to get into tech because it’s super cool

Juliette Francois is an ITMB student currently on a year-long technical support analyst placement at IBM. She didn’t consider herself a very technical person but now she is doing a very technical role, which she loves. Juliette wants to see more young girls to realise the benefits of a tech career.

What is your current job role?
We have a piece of software called Cognos and I work in the support team. If anyone has any problem with the last 3 versions of the software, I’m here to find answers, find solutions and help people fix things.

What do you like about the ITMB course?
I chose the ITMB course because I knew it was mix between IT and management and this is what I want to do. I didn’t want to do a very technical course like computer science but I didn’t want to do a purely business course either. Thanks to the ITMB course, I’ve attended several employer/student events that have really improved by networking skills. It really helps having an ITMB degree because it shows your soft skills. Employers look for tech people who can easily communicate to different people and work well with others.

What do you enjoy about your job role?
What I love about my role is the problem solving. It feels like a puzzle every time you have a new problem. When you get a new problem, you have to find a solution and a way to work around it. Sometimes you have to talk to people in other teams because our team don’t support everything. There’s a lot of back and forth with a lot of support teams. There’s also a lot of back and forth between us and the customer. So it’s not just a tech thing. It’s a tech thing and a social thing, which is nice. It’s a challenge and you always have something to do.

What do you like about working at IBM?
I feel like the other placement students are really nice and we all have fun together.  We help each other out all the time. Our managers help us as well. We’ve got a lot of support.

What would you say to encourage more girls into tech?
I really want girls to get into tech because it’s super cool, plus girls in tech can break the norm and surprise people. I do the role as any guy would, but people are still surprised when I do my job the same or better than the boys. People are super nice to us and it’s also very cool. It’s not something you should be afraid of. I’m not a very techy person yet I’m doing a tech support role. You can thrive in this role.

Any advice or tips?
Don’t underestimate yourself. You can do it, anyone can do it. People will be here to help you so you shouldn’t be afraid. I didn’t know anything about the tool that I’m using and now I’m quite successful in my role. You just have to be confident and not hesitate to speak your mind and ask questions to people. It’s just how things work and how you learn.

What are your future career plans?
I am going to finish my 4th year at university and then I would really like to stay in a tech role  at IBM. One thing’s for sure, I know that I want to do a tech role with customer relations elements.
