My career developed rapidly and there was always something new to learn

Claudia was introduced to the world of tech through a national campaign aimed at attracting women into digital careers. She then went on to studying computer science at Newcastle Poly. Her placement year consisted of working as a Cobol Programmer and Claudia believes that this really helped grow her interest in tech: “They really invested in my development and helped grow me capabilities in terms of programming,” she said.

Currently Claudia is working as a Senior Technical Delivery Manager at DWP, and she’s really enjoyed her journey so far: “My career has developed and moved in some unexpected ways, although I have always been connected with tech,” she said.

With demand for tech skills high, Claudia’s lucky enough to have worked in a range of different sectors including health, finance and the airline sector, in many different roles. “I liked technology because it never stands still, my career developed rapidly and there was always something new to learn. I’ve worked across lots of different types of businesses, which keeps the challenge fresh and interesting,” she said.

Claudia has really enjoyed her career in tech so far but has one regret, that she didn’t start her tech career earlier:  ” I wish I had known that a career in tech was an option,” she said.  She’s now a keen advocate for women in tech, and in helping girls gain the confidence to pursue non-traditional tech careers. “We need to get out and tell young girls about the possibilities and we need to be very honest, tell girls that they can have a fab career, earn good money and balance their life aspirations but it won’t always be easy but it will be worth it,” she said.

In the future Claudia hopes to continue working and developing her knowledge in her field. “It’s been a great 25 years and I am looking forward to the next chapter,” she said.  She loves working in tech and wouldn’t have it any other way. “I love the variety in what I do. I love how technology can help in so many ways. I love that I have to keep expanding my knowledge and developing my experience to keep current and keep delivering the best solutions”.
