Spotlight: Queen Mary University of London

Read how Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) offers a great Tech Industry Gold experience in this month’s university spotlight.

QMUL is a Russell Group institution based in east London, teaching across the full disciplinary spectrum. Since 2013, the university has offered Tech Industry Gold accredited degrees, starting with IT Management for Business (ITMB) and in the following year introducing Software Engineering for Business (SEfB).

Its curriculum is constantly changing to broaden the undergraduate experience, build social capital and enhance prospects on graduation, allowing graduates to make a positive societal impact. It was the first Russell Group institution to deliver Degree Apprenticeship programmes and remain at the forefront of this type of delivery. The university offers the Tech Industry Gold accredited Bsc Digital and Technology Solutions Degree Apprenticeship and plans to offer the Msc Data Analytics Degree Apprenticeship, from September 2019.

Says Antonios Kaniadakis, QMUL course leader, “one thing that makes the Tech Industry Gold degrees stand out is the community of industry experts, employers and alumni that actively support these programmes. Students are presented with unique opportunities to learn, network, develop professional skills and build their confidence. These, together with in-depth knowledge of technical and management subjects prepare our students at Queen Mary for the best jobs in the digital economy.” QMUL was awarded Silver in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF).

QMUL has a grant initiative embedded in its strategy called ‘Going for Gold’ in preparation for the next TEF submission. This also offers students the opportunity to participate and actively influence what the university is doing to improve the student experience.

Many QMUL students have embraced the Tech Industry Gold experience by taking part in competitions, summer placements and winning work shadowing opportunities.
