Dan Hale, 1st Line Engineer at Bango

By Dan Hale, 1st Line Engineer at Bango

I have always had a passion for technology. I always enjoyed ICT at secondary school and sixth form and was often called upon by my family and friends to resolved computer problems. I thought why not turn what I enjoy into a career.

When I finished my A-Levels I did not achieve the grades I was hoping for; so I was not sure how I could progress into a career I wanted. After looking around I became interested in the apprenticeship scheme. I discovered an apprenticeship in City and Guilds Level 2 in IT System and Principles. I was aware with the apprenticeship scheme I could would work my way through Level 3 (City and Guilds Level 2 in IT System and Principles, including CCNA certifications) and Level 4 (which is where I am now) whilst working as a 1st Line Engineer for the Platform Operations Centre at Bango in Cambridge.

What do I get up to day to day? My role includes manning the 24/7 Platform Operations Centre within a team of 10 engineers; ensuring the platform is available to our partners at all times. I answer in depth questions asked by our technical partners and act as an escalation point to our associate engineers. My job also includes internal IT, supporting Bango’s staff.

On top of my day job, I am also studying and completing assignments for my Level 4 apprenticeship; this includes Microsoft certifications. Completing this will move me onto the next stage of my career starting level 5 and 6 which are degree level.

Completing my degree over the next three years will allow me to get a full Bachelor’s of science in Computing; something which I never thought I could achieve after my A-Level grades. Once completing my degree, I wish to further my career in IT, hopefully moving to 2nd Line and beyond. If the opportunity is there, I would also consider studying for a Master’s degree.

My journey through the apprentice programme has been an extremely positive one. It has increased my enthusiasm for working in the technology industry and has confirmed this was the right career path for me. Working in tech always presents new challenges and always gives me room to improve myself and career progression.
