Joe a digital degree apprentice, shares his story…

Degree Apprentice Joe MMU‘I decided to do a degree apprenticeship because I realised that I could work and earn a wage as well as earn a degree. I first encountered the degree apprenticeship scheme when Shop Direct came into my sixth form to speak to us about the opportunity.

I was immediately attracted by the enormity of Shop Direct’s brand and was excited by the prospect of working on their apps, which have an impact on millions of people.

My role

I produce IOS apps and I’m currently working on the Very app, implementing new features and fixing bugs. I’m also using Agile Software Development to create a gallery page so we are able to work iteratively and collaboratively on projects.

Manchester Metropolitan University

Apprenticeships are fantastic – you have the opportunity to learn on the job, but studying alongside working gives you the chance to support and enhance practical skills with theoretical understanding.

Whilst studying at Manchester Metropolitan University, I’ve gained a much wider perspective of how a business works and how programming affects a business, which has been really useful.

Everyone at the university has been very supportive; we have been given sessions on academic writing and have been offered one on one support should we need it.

Something I particularly enjoy about university are the group sessions in which we can collaborate and learn with people who all have closely aligned goals.

Shop Direct

The balance between work and university can be a challenge but Shop Direct gives us plenty of time during the week. Provided that I take care and stay organised, I can easily balance my work and my studies.

As well as great support network at Manchester Metropolitan University, I have support from all my colleagues at Shop Direct.

My favourite thing about working at Shop Direct is continual learning process. I also love the opportunities that come with working for and learning from such a large business; I am able to apply the skills I have acquired to many different fields.

Doing a Degree Apprenticeship was definitely the best career choice I have made so far!’
